Quinta de Reis

A Quinta

BRIEF HISTORY

The vineyards of Vinha de Reis are owned by the family of the same name, at least for four generations. Localized in the Portuguese  Wine Region Dão, Sub-region of Silgueiros, includes 7 vine parcels totalizing 15 hectares of area, in the geographic position (40⁰35'56''N; 7⁰55'32''O), 430 m above sea level, overlooking the river that lends name to the region.

The largest and most significant among them is Quinta de Reis, located in the peculiar “terroir” of Oliveira de Barreiros village, from where we can see the rustic landscape of Serra da Estrela.  The vineyards are installed in “Royat prune” cord, North-South orientation and distributed by grape varieties (Touriga-Nacional, Tinta-Roriz, Jaen and Alfrocheiro for red wine, Encruzado, Malvasia-Fina and Bical for the white), arranged according the best oenological techniques and the century-old experience advises. Viticulture is carried out with newest technical requirement standards and respect for nature; the pruning, weeding of the fruits and harvest are performed manually.

The current owner, Jorge Reis, who practiced Gynecology-Obstetrics and been the director of the Hospital São Teotónio-Viseu until 2002, decided to devote himself full-time to viticulture and Oenology since retirement. For that, he went for specific studies at the Escola Superior Agrária de Viseu and obtained a diploma.

In 2003 he undertook the refurbishment of the old wine-cellar (1924) at the farm by providing it with the most modern oenological technology. His efforts, knowledge and sensitivity were recognized in 2006 by winning the award “Best Dão Wine”

Quinta de Reis produces the VINHA DE REIS label for red and white wines and in exceptional years the WINE NOTE red wine.
